Chair Art Workshop
Release Date: 8/1/2001. Expired: 8/20/2001
The Renaissance Center is hosting a Chair Art Workshop with Terrence Donaldson beginning August 20 and continuing each Monday through Sept. 24 from 7-9 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a metal, wood or vinyl chair and transform it into a work of art. Everyone is welcome, from the beginner to the more experienced artist. Tuition for this workshop is $250 which includes the supply fee. Deadline for registration is Aug. 13.
Donaldson, who was an art instructor at Dickson Middle School, recently taped a segment for HGTV at the center which is due to air late summer. The students can use their own sketches or famous works of art as the subject matter for their chair.
“You don’t have to paint like Michelangelo to do this,” stated Donaldson. “Part of the fun is deciding which artist goes on the chair or choosing your own artwork to go on it. Each chair is different; it takes on its own personality. It is a renaissance or re-birth of the chair.”
The chairs are fully functional after completed. Using acrylics is binding with the vinyl and the acrylic paints flex with the chair.
“The great thing about this workshop is that you can go to your garage or attic and find that old chair that never got thrown out and add new life to it,” states Bob Kucher, director of visual arts at the center. “The result is a fun and functional piece that turns a routine piece of furniture into a conversation piece.”
Donaldson has several chairs on display at the Center just outside the art studios. To register for this workshop, call (615)740-5600 or come by the center at 855 Hwy. 46 S. in Dickson.
