Release Date: 4/20/2006. Expired: 7/19/2006

The 2006 Summer Passport to Fun can take you on magical journeys to foreign lands or to the haunted swamps of Southeastern folktales at The Renaissance Center.

The Summer Passport to Fun is a program featuring 17 cultural and educational facilities in Middle Tennessee. It includes discounts on special activities at each institution and the chance to win prizes at the end of the summer.

The Summer Passport program is produced in partnership with The Tennessean’s Newspaper In Education, the Mayor’s Office of Children and Youth, Museum Advocates and Inter-Museum Council of Nashville. Generous funding has been received from the Tennessee Arts Commission and The Memorial Foundation.

Information on the participating institutions and the activities they offer this summer is available on the Passport to Fun web site at www.nashvillemuseums.org.

The Renaissance Center’s Mind Enriching Theatre (MET) series is offering two theatrical productions for Summer Passport participants in 2006. Summer Passport tickets are $4.

For participants four years old through fourth grade, the MET series presents Aladdin.

Based on the Arabian tale and written specifically for young audiences, Aladdin will encourage them to use their imaginations while they are whisked away on a exciting adventure. Students will be spellbound by the comedy, suspense, and excitement as Aladdin defeats the Evil Magician and marries the beautiful princess!

For participants in grades five through eight, the MET series presents Wiley and the Hairy Man, a fable written by Jack Stokes and adapted for the stage by Alice Molter.

The Hairy Man is coming to get you! Set in the mysterious and magical Tombigee swamp, this eerie show centers on a young boy, his conjure woman Mother, his faithful Hound dog, and the Hairy Man who haunts Wiley’s days and dreams. In an exciting duel of wits, Wiley learns to rely upon his own resources and conquers two villains: the Hairy Man and his own fear.

Wiley and the Hairy Man is produced through special arrangement with Dramatic Publishing, Inc.

The MET series productions are being offered for field trips at The Renaissance Center Tuesdays through Fridays, May 2-July 12. Whenever a production is scheduled by a field trip group of at least 25 students, tickets will then be available to Summer Passport participants. The plays also will be presented on Wednesdays, June 21, June 28, July 12 and July 19 for Camp Renaissance participants and Summer Passport tickets will be available for those productions as well.
